Due to the success of the first event held last year Kent Kite Flyers have been invited back to be involved in this day, including co-ordinating the event.
The venue is the Memorial Park Kings Road Herne Bay, officially opening from 11.30 until 17.00hours
"Flying Fish" demonstration team will be taking part and it is anticipated that there will be other kite flying in the arena as well space to fly outside.
Due to the size of the flying field there is not sufficient space for large inflatables.
There will be a hot food trader on site. Application has been made to CAA for height clearance of 1500ft.
All kite flyers are invited, but car passes will be required, which will be available from me, by posting in this thread, or pm, or via e-mail to malcolmf@kentkiteflyers.com or else parking is on the side roads around the park
Hope kite flyers will do their best to support the event, as if is succeeds as one day event, it is hope a larger field will be found for a two day event with camping in future,
Any offers of demonstrations or suggestions will be welcomed.
Members of Kent Kite Flyers have a separate posting in the members section

To all flyers who have requested car passes and are expecting to attend.
Alex from Flying Fish is willing to give a ballet flying tutorial to any-one wishing to learn more about this type of flying two line kites. He may only be able to give a couple of flyers a chance. If we have any volunteers, this will take place in the main arena, which include the basic tution and a fly to music. It does help if you have the basic knowledge of two line flying. If you have the same kites as each other it would help although he does have three "Dream-on "Kites which can be used; this have a fairly wide wind window.
It would be a 30-40 minute slot during the afternoon

Have a good day tomorrow everyone. Think of me slaving over a hot sewing machine while you are all out in the fresh air enjoying yourselves. IMAG0115 by Gareth Williams, on Flickr

Some pics of yesterday here. If anyone took some pics of our flying, I'd like to see them. Hope Barbara, Mike and Tim have recovered by now. Look forward to see a Kent Kite Flyers pair or team at a festival in the near future!

Firstly, thank you to all members who supported to event yesterday and special thank you to Lex and Irma for travelling all the way from Southampton to put on a show, and generally join in.
Secondly, I will be having a feedback session with the Herne Bay Group who funded the day, and would like comments from all those who attended, good and especially bad, with suggestions as how the event could be made better, on the limited budget. Comments from others who could not attend, whether members of KKF or juts members of the forum would also be welcome
Thirdly,
It is a great disappointment to me, at the lack of support from flyers from other clubs, although invited, either as clubs or individually through the kitecalendar or through The Kiteflyer. I know the site is not sufficient in size to have large inflatables as no other kites would be able to fly, and although good to look at, this in my personal opinion does nothing to attract the public to become kite flyers and consider joining a club. How do we attract various other club's members to small events
Is it just happening in Kent or is this a general trend. If kite flyers do not support small events wherever and whenever possible, these will not grow into larger events, or the smaller events will die out and the public will not be encouraged to join in. At all events be they large or small which KKF members attend either as a club or individually, we encourage the public to some and talk with us about kiting and how to get started. Again in my opinion we must not allow there be a trend to exclusivity from engaging with the public.

Glad it went well . In my humble opinion I believe big inflatables do attract the public, they seem to like them, better than a single line kite, and surely once they are at an event, they can be spoken to and given info about kite flying, loan kites given out to engage the public. As from experience at sumners, people are happy to look and not take it any further. Regarding the issue of flyers from other clubs, I think the calender is so full of events that people have to pick and choose what they attend, and travelling distances for just one day is expensive, so in case of us this weekend we choose an event nearer and had 3 days away. Also other commitments and family have to be fitted in, also partners may not have any interest in kites so they have to be considered. Sue

Dear all, just some comments from our side, based on us joining KKF yesterday. Just our thoughts, so ignore as you see fit!
- I was worried about children running into the arena a few times, without there being someone to stop it. Fortunately, it happened when there were no kites flying at high speed through the arena, but a kid can very easily get badly hurt; kite lines at tension and at speed act as cheese wire .... So I feel there needs to be more of a stewards' presence to avoid accidents.
- When the fighter kite demonstration was in the arena, it would have been good to have commentary (either from the flyer himself via the roving microphone, or from someone else) explaining how you fly a fighter kite, etc. Would have made it more accessible to the public.
- Obviously, personally, I'd like to see some more dual-line or quad-line displays in the arena, and the arena schedule had plenty of space to accommodate more scheduled events. I know plenty of dual- and quad-line flyers (individual, pairs, teams), but the issue is obviously to make it attractive for them to come to Kent, and there the limited budget comes in ...
- The site indeed isn't suitable for lots of big inflatables, but people like Karl Longbottom, David Ellison or Nick James can provide a nice display of smaller single-line kites. Of course, getting Karl, David or Nick to come has financial implications.
From the discussion above, it seems to me there has to be a choice made between two types of festivals. On the one hand, there is the festival that brings lots of people in, and for that, big spectacular kites really work. But I agree that that will not necessarily get people to pick up a kite and start flying. If you want people to go away from a festival determined to get flying (whether it's one, two, or four lines), you need another kind of festival, which doesn't necessarily bring in lots of people. Because of the size of the site, the two are difficult to combine. How to get people to fly kites is an issue which has been discussed at length at various levels in the UK and abroad, and no one seems to have hit on the silver bullet. Getting the public actively involved might be one way. For instance, have a slot in the arena programme where people are invited to try their hands on, say, a dual-line kite. I would assume that there are a few decent dual-line kites in the possession of the club that could be used for that. Issue is of course, that that might be fun for the person getting that tuition (plus their friends/family), but not necessarily exciting for the public in general to watch. Which again comes back to the issue of a festival with spectacular kites to bring in loads of people, or a festival that's aimed at getting people to fly kites.
Anyway, just my tuppence!

Steve and Lex,
Many thanks for your considered comments, some or all of which I will take to the feedback and debriefing session with the Herne Bay Group

Steve and Lex, Many thanks for your considered comments, some or all of which I will take to the feedback and debriefing session with the Herne Bay Group I think it was Sue not Steve that replied. I do not know the answer to getting Kite flyers to come to events but it does not help having a Kite Making workshop on the same day with 4 of our Members attending, something to look forward to seeing at one of our events. Malcolm worked very hard to get this event up and running and those KKF Members that did attend were on the go all the time to keep a flow of activity in the Arena all day, with Wendy acting as Ground Crew also Steward to get the little **** out of the Arena while Parents who were not bothered sat and had Tea at the Caterers. We were under staffed. We have travelled up to Peterborough on two Occasions as a day trip. so if we can do it...................................... Len.

I have given some detailed feedback to Malcolm by e-mail but here's a few comments to get people thinking
I agree with Alex the barrier was not up to the task did not have enough posts and Herne Bay Community Group Projects Limited did not supply any marshals that I saw!
Commentary was sparse we all need to take this on board yes we are there to fly but we cant rely on Malcolm to do all the front man stuff! Though I for one would not have wanted to comment on the fighter display.
I think we got a good balance of medium size inflatables and large single liners its a shame that some of our dual and quad line members were not able to be with us and that is possible something to look at for another year.
The PA was certainly better than last year but lacked some thing and the staff took an age to sort problems when they occurred and the small part I played commentating the delay on the speakers was most off putting whilst you were talking
I don't know what advertising HBCGPL did but many locals said to me they had not seen any the only people who I spoke to who had seen adverts where Facebook contacts of mine or KKF
