Hi all,
I have just registered with the forum and looking for some advice on how to start off kiting in the south east. I did some power kiteing over the summer and want to spend this winter improving my control and technical abilities, with a view to start kiting surfing or landboarding. I am very new to this so any pointers would be welcomed. Blackheath is my nearest "sensible" place to fly, so that f anyone is up there would be great to meet up? Anyway, look forward to hearing from you Kent kite flyers.
Kieran

Hi Kieran, nice to hear from you. I have been known to buggy in the past and still throw around a power kite from time to time but as I've got older I'm now concentrating on sports and stunt flying. Blackheath is a good site but you should be aware that 'technically' there are some local restrictions in place for traction there. In saying that however, there was a kiting event due to take place there round about now that the club would have been involved in but that was obviously cancelled - perhaps next year! I'm afraid to say that most club members tend to fly various single-line kites varying from small to enormous and us stunt and power flyers are a bit of minority. You might do better approach SEKA ( www.facebook.com/groups/2312699953) as they may be more suited to you. For surfing, you need to get to the coast - for Camber, the Kitesurf Centre ( www.thekitesurfcentre.com/) are very good and do equipment and lessons; I live in Whitstable and Boardworx ( www.board-worx.com/) offer the same. You should also know that you should be insured for traction flying but this is fairly easy to sort out. Tim

Hi Tim,
Thank you for getting back to me - really appreciated and some useful information. I did not know about the need for insurance, which I see will be a must as I progress. If you're ever looking to fly near blackheath drop me a line - sorry pun intended!
Have a great one, Kieran

The club does offer insurance through its association with the British Kite Flyer Association (BKFA) both for club events and for individual but this doesn't cover power and traction kiting. The accepted policies can be obtained from the British Kitesports Association ( www.britishkitesports.org/) or the Scottish Power Kite Association ( spka.org/). Generally speaking only a policy from one of these organisations would be considered for some traction kite club memberships and are usually mandatory for events, venues and even use of some beaches. I used to be involved with power-kiting for Kent Scouts (and technically still am), the guys did link up with Essex Kite Park ( essexkitepark.co.uk/) over in Southend - you might do worse than get in touch with them. Hi Kieran I fly quite regularly at Blackheath, however I only fly single line kites. I am hoping to be there this Thursday afternoon depending on the weather, between 2 and 4 pm. Regards James
