Presumably the thought is at eastourt Meadows, but I don't think it sounds like an appropriate flying site really. If you're after something rural, why not tray Hayesden Country Park near Tonbridge?

It was Gerty who suggested this having flown there before. If I remember correctly she said there was a field on the right as you drive into the park although I cannot see it on the site plan. However the most local flyers wont be around next weekend will you Kevin! Mike

Mike is correct, I will not be able to attend this weekend due to prior commitments. As you go onto the site a short roadway takes you to the car park. About 1/3 of the way down this road is the entrance to a field on the right, this is used as an overflow car park during the summer months. This field is quite clear on Google earth but looks a little small. The Estuary area itself is a Site of Special Scientific Interest but the field should be far enough away not to interfere with the birdies and have the warden in a tiz. If the weather is clear on Wednesday I will go down there birding and chat to the staff at the visitor centre to make sure there are no by-laws or any other restrictions. Even if not used next weekend it will be useful to know for the future. As an aside the car park can get quite packed especially in good weather, mainly young families and/or dog walkers. Eastcourt Meadows I do not think would be suitable - most of it is scrubland, it is quite a distance from the car park and they have done work there over the years to encourage birdlife.

This is not the venue for next Sunday as Mike says the locals cannot attend.

I went to Riverside today and chatted to the lady in the visitor centre, she checked with Warden Colin who said that Kite Flying is fine. The only ban they have is against anything motorised (eg Radio controlled Helicopters and Planes). The overflow car park IS too small for flying - however opposite the overflow car park is an events field which is about the same size as that of the Brogdale field we tend to use if not a little bigger (on Google Maps its the grassy bit between Sharps Green and the main entrance), it is used (as is most of Riverside) by Dog Walkers, but what public area is not these days. It is probably worth giving it at least one try at sometime, though be warned - from experience parking can be next to impossible on really nice days.

May be this is a site where we should talk to the Park Ranger and in dry weather it may be possible for Club Members to park on the field. If we where there three or four times a year it would add another attraction to the Park. Just a thought.

Are you referring to Hayesden or Riverside Malcolm?
We do need somwhere in North Kent where we will be welcome, even if it is not the most perfect site, to support all Kent bods....
I have actually held two farly large kite flying meetings at Riverside and we have had very good days with lovely facilities. They were about 10 years ago but things have not changed that much since then!!!

If the weather holds up on Sunday, I might take the dogs for a walk in Hayesden and report back. Wouldn't see it as an alternative to Tonbridge park though, just an additional location for those in West Kent.

Unlikely Malvern. My recollection is that the lake was formed by the creation of the flood barrier after the 1967 floods put Tonbridge high street under a couple of feet of water for a couple of weeks. The water on the sports ground reached about 10 ft deep.
Get a different perspective - try KAP
