I have had a look at this site, it a large Green surrounded by a road with parking all round. Public Toilets sited in Park Street, locked at night also a toilet for Disabled with access via a " Radar " Key, I have one and I think there may be more in the club. Also near by is the Museum which Ekim says may hold a very old Kite, not sure on opening times.

Len had suggested looking at this site at the committee meeting last week, as another alternative to the Hop Farm who wish to make a charge for it s use in 2014. So it is a possible trial site for 2014 with a fly-in, If it turns out to be a useful site, I may have to approach the towno council about flying there regularly

I assume its the bit of green in the middle of Lydd bounded by Manor road, Skinner Road & Dolphin Road. Cannot see Park road on map at the moment, will screw my eyes in and look closer. (OK I have found it, wasnt looking west enough) Would there be any problems with the airport so close? Mike

Mike How close is the airport I will have to recheck but my brain at this time of day says we have to fly a minimum of 5K ( 3 miles ) from any airport and not above 200 ft.

Mike
How close is the airport I will have to recheck but my brain at this time of day says we have to fly a minimum of 5K ( 3 miles ) from any airport and not above 200 ft.
Found this on t'internet Article97 (3) (d) A kite shall not be flown at a height of more than 30 metres above ground level within the aerodrome traffic zone of a notified aerodrome during the notified operating hours of that aerodrome. [Although it is generally accepted that for safety reasons you should not fly within 5km of any aerodrome]. It is suggested on the Suffolk kite flyers website that one could fly closer to an airport with an exemption from the CAA Having looked on the Satellite maps on Google the runway runs almost parallel to the Rype and it looks like any flight path would not be over it however that would, I think need to be investigated. Mike I seem to remember some time ago looking for what the CAA class as a 'notified aerodrome' and Lydd did not come up on the list. Mike is quite correct The Rype is all the land from Queens Road south to the junction of Skinner Road, Manor Road & Tourney Road, though I suspect we would use that area between Paine Road & Hamilton Road to fly on. Map link The actual distance from the southern end of the runway to the centre of the Rype is 1790m which is 1.7km or 1.11 miles

Thanks for checking Len. If we are able to use it members in the west of the county will have s shorter journey to make up for all the times they travel to the east.... hope we can fly there occasionally.
We also have a Radar key.
