Press Release
Exciting summer lined up for Dunstable Downs
Thousands of people visit the National Trust’s Dunstable Downs each year, to take in the magnificent views, the beautiful landscape and the enormous skies that are perfect for kite flying. This year, there’s a new summer programme to look forward to.
The Dunstable Downs Kite Festival will be taking a break in 2019 and instead an exciting programme of events and activities has been lined up for the summer.
As well as kite making workshops, a kite school and kite clubs, visitors will have the opportunity to get involved in the National Trust’s Summer of Sport programme. This will run alongside the current sporting activities including Park Run, the Trust 10K and ranger walks that take place throughout the year.
Summer of Sport includes Kite School with kite making for little ones and stunt kite flying lessons for older children and adults. Other activities include soft archery, football, balance bike course and badminton. We will have free borrow boxes available including giant lawn games, croquet and soft cricket sets.
If you need to find some shade and a great spot for a picnic find the glade inside Chute wood near to our adventure play area or build a den with a grown up. Then wander through our beautiful wild flower meadows and set out with nets and sketch books to discover the amazing wildlife found across the estate with our ‘make friends with a bug activity’ We will be hosting a variety of new 50 Things adventure activities including wild art workshops and with something happening every day for the whole six week holidays this summer keep up to date on the What’s On page of our website.
General Manager, Susie Mercer said “We know that the Kite Festival is extremely popular, however, with so many people on site over one weekend, the increased popularity was beginning to cause significant wear and tear to the Downs. As a conservation charity, our role is to look after special places for everyone and it’s important that we consider the environmental impact of large events, but also ensure that they are financially sustainable.
“We want to encourage people to get outdoors to enjoy nature and this beautiful landscape that they have on their doorstep. So, we’ve thought long and hard, and instead of having one large event over one weekend in the summer; this year we’re looking at having a wide range of smaller events, which will offer more opportunities for people to enjoy this wonderful site throughout the year.”
