I have been in conversation and had a visit to the events co-ordinator for the above wild animal park which is near Hythe. We have agreed a one day flying at Port Lympne, which may be a bit more than a fly-in, further discussions to be had, but the day will be advertised on teh Kite Calendar and KSGB diary for other flyers to attend. Hope many members will come along and support which will be held on the parkland before you entry into the actual enclosed area of the park. More details as we go along.

Please find a link here to the information and possible programme for Port Lympne, The initial launch is to be a mass launch of as many kites as possible in to the air at 10.30, with the inflatables launching a liitle bit later. The original suggestion from me and the committee members to the events manager was that as it was at short notice it would be more of a general fly such as at Walmer. However he required a more formal with wriggle room programme, so as to advertise the event. I will be posting vehicle passes on here as well as sending out to members so as they are allowed to park within the restricted area for flying by kiters. These will be for putting on dashboard/windows screens. www.aspinallfoundation.org/port-lympne/whats-on/kite-flying-fun-day/

Please find attached a poster for this event conjured up by the publicity department at Port Lympne. I would ask as many members as possible to print copies and advertise where they are able, even it is only in the back of vehicles. Please note that kite flyers will need a vehicle pass to access the flying area, members of KKF will find one being posted during this week in mmebrs forum and sent out in a genaral e-mal. Non members if you wish to obtain a pass either p.m. on this forum or on this threas or e-mail me := malcolmf@kentkiteflyers.com Port LympneKite-Fun-Day-Poster_JUL17_v3.pdf (919.05 KB)

Please find attached the vehicle pass for Port Lympne, which has to be shown on the vehicle dashboard to allow entrance onto the flying area. I will be sending these out by e-mail at beginning of next week, as details of parking etc are finalised. CAR PASS.docx (98.98 KB)

Which entrance to we use? I usually come off the M20 at I think it is either junction 10 or 11 where the folkestone services are situated and then follow the signs to Port Lympne, which eventually takes me to the I think the main entrance, and follow the road round. I believe there is a back road entrance. The flying site will towards the entrance I use, away from the main car park. Hopefully it will signed. I am visiting Port Lympne on Friday

Winds are looking rather light for flo-tails?

Any modifications to the programme given the light winds forecast?

As previous posted as far as I am aware the main car entrance is as posted. When you get to where the road bears to the left you should be able to see red past. Fencing. At the bend you should be allowed to go across the grass to fenced off area;there is a gap at back end just in front of the hay bales, for kiters to enter onto the field or they can park along the fencing. The progrMmme is provisional and of course depends very much on the weather conditions;in which case we make up as we go along, keeping as close to the programme as possible. My weather shows a chance of showers first thing becoming overcast with done sun and winds of 13-16 mph. Much like today.

Hmm, I think describing conditions as challenging would be generous, and I'm not really sure why. What looked like a great location, reasonably clear I'd have expected much cleaner wind than what we got. So I rather suspect that we didn't provide the organisers with the spectacle they were looking for as we battled to keep anything flying. Watching lifters veer across the sky, or completely deflate and plummet to the ground is never much fun.
Even late afternoon, when the wind had swung through 180 degrees and picked up, there were still massive holes. The result was much the same, kites that had been flying (briefly) and pulling hard, suddenly fell out of the sky. It was a lovely afternoon, but I never managed to get to the car long enough to find my hat to put on, as every time I turned my back something somewhere would be falling out of the sky.
In my view, we were too far away from the car park for any interaction with the public. In an event like that, we don't really need barriers, in fact they are positively dangerous. Metal spikes versus kite fabric - there is only ever going to be one winner. I'd much prefer to have people wandering around seeing how we do what we do and asking questions, than kept behind some barrier or other and unable to interact with the kites and kiters. I know this isn't always a popular view with the elfs and safeways and many kite flyers, but provided people are willing to take responsibility for their actions, and not ignore instructions when give, then everyone should be able to play nicely together.
Personally, if we charged for attending, then I'd feel embarrassed, and give them their money back.
All sounds a bit negative, but really the only thing to mar an otherwise great location was really c**p wind.

I'm glad you have said that Gareth. I was beginning to doubt my flowform. Ive not seen it collapse quite like that before. A great afternoon as you say slightly spoiled by the inconsistent wind. I spoke to Malcolm before we left and he was saying that Port Lympne was very happy with our display and were still looking forward to doing it again next year. It was good to see Guy with his superheroes. Thanks to all who attended helping to fill the sky, on occasions, with colour. Mike
