Dear all
We've signed up to Go Sober this October! That means, for the full 31 days of October, we are going to be booze-free;
But Go Sober is much more than giving up alcohol for a month. We're also raising funds for Macmillan Cancer Support so they can help people affected by cancer.
We'd appreciate any support you can give throughout the month. Any donation is a good donation, so head to
www.gosober.org.uk/users/tony-smith and send any spare change our way!
Thanks in advance for your sponsorship!
Tony and Chris

Well we did it! We only shared a bottle of wine on Tony's birthday, we were allowed to do that! We managed the whole of October without booze, and have we drunk a lot of water and tea!!
We are very proud of ourselves as this was also the month we had it confirmed that Tony has bowel cancer, and is awaiting treatment that will take place within the next three weeks. So please remember any donations will be extra special for us.

Just to inform members and others who view the board, Tony Smith has had his operation for bowel cancer and the initial diagnosis is that it has been successful not sure if he has to have chemo. Christine will keep me update and I will do likewise on this page. I have sent good from KKF for a full and speedy recovery.

Here is the latest update on Tony's progress:-
"Just a quick update on Tony, he is still in the hospital, having had a few complications after his operation, which seemed at first to have gone very well. He has started back on the road to recovery now having had the drip removed yesterday and been put back on food and fluids by mouth. He is also getting out of bed and walking short distances, mainly to the loo!
After the anaesthetic he was a bit confused about where he was and what was happening, but that seems to be clearing up now. Anyway I think we have a long road to travel yet.
What bright spark decided to merge two hospitals in two towns with poor transport links totally escapes me! It makes it difficult for me (and others who don't drive) to get to visit him but between family, friends and friends of our children I have managed most days.

Wells, stick the new hospital somewhere inaccessible to anyone! Anyway, glad things are improving, and here is to a complete recovery.

A further update on Tony from Chris
"I am very pleased to tell you that Tony came home yesterday. Fortunately our friend Julian took me to the hospital, or Tony would have had to come home by train and bus! Not a good idea at all. He seems a lot better just for being home, and is eating and drinking well.
More to follow, when we have the results of the biopsy.

Further update from Chris on Tony Smith
" It is four weeks since Tony's op, we have been to see the consultant this morning, he is pleased with Tony and both the consultant and the nurse noticed his weight loss - around 2 stone! Consultant is pleased with his progress but would like him to have chemo as there was one gland associated with the tumour that showed signs of cancer. He is to see an oncologist in the new year and we will see what happens next.
Tony is starting to eat better, little and often seems to be working, so will keep that up, we are going to have a quiet Christmas, and hope to see the family early in 2017. The consultant also said Tony can start to think about driving a bit, but to make sure the seat belt does not hurt his wound and that he can do an emergency stop. We will give it a try towards the end of the week.
Hope you all have a lovely Christmas.
Chris "

Here is an update from Tony, about his health problems
"Hello (fellow members, I am) still in the land of the living here and about to start Chemo treatment No3 on Friday. Treatment is ok with a pleasant French nurse at my side. I can do without the side effects though, aches and pains are plentiful and cold weather is very painful. Give my best to all and sundry and we will see you after Chemo No8! I am looking forward to looking up a kite line again"

Latest update on Tony's health from Chris
"We are halfway through chemo number 4, Tony is definitely going to have 8, which brings us to the end of June (I think!).
Anyway he is not doing too bad, although he is very tired all the time, and drops off to sleep frequently through the day, and his type of chemo makes him feel the cold, so this time of year is not a good time to be going through this!
We recently found out that he had a heart problem just after his op, so we have been to see the cardiologist and this week he has worn a heart monitor for 24 hours and on Sunday he has an echocardiogram! We also had a memory test exam this week, that was quite entertaining, as the nurse asked questions designed to test Tony's cognitive status. Then we saw the doctor and he told us that for a man of his age a reasonable result would be 82-84 and an ok result would be 85-88, Tony scored 89!
So that is one worry off the list, although he did tell us that Tony has had a mini stroke at some time, this showed on the CT scan of his head, so that explains why he is on statins and aspirin! "

So some almost good news on the health front for once. Good luck with the continued chemo. Keep smiling, there's no better cure for anything in my experience.
